Clinical Hypnotherapy

This is the use of hypnosis in a clinical setting. Clinical at its root definition means that someone is observing and treating a person rather than engaging in theoretical or laboratory studies. That definition applies here to the term Clinical Hypnotherapy. Clinical is just the action of using hypnosis in a therapy setting. It’s also a title/degree that a hypnotherapist can receive. For instance, I attended a school and have a diploma as a Clinical Hypnotherapist.

If you are looking for a Hypnotherapist, ask them questions about their training and education. This is a broad field that is not overseen by state boards the way most medical and mental health is. A person can watch some videos, get a script, and call themselves a hypnotherapist, which unfortunately taints the profession with unqualified practitioners

What to look for/ask when you want to see a hypnotherapist:

Did you attend a school that required live training?

  • It Doesn’t matter if it was online or in person. You want them to have been taught by a person, not just have streamed a few videos

  • Are you certified?

    • This means they have a board overseeing them; they have required continuing education and ethics requirements.

  • Do you utilize one method, or do you have a variety of methods?

    • You want someone with a wide range of tools/scripts. This will be more effective, and you’ll see the progress you want.

    • Some trainings provide a hypnotist with one script to work off of and train people to only use it. This massively limits the progress you can make as a client. I know this because my initial training was on one limited method. It was a live training and well done. But as I worked with clients, I found limits and searched for better education so that you, the client, could make the progress you wanted.

  • Do you create custom therapeutic suggestions/affirmations?

    • Some forms of hypnotherapy don’t provide for the creation of suggestions tailored to your unique situation; they utilize standard affirmations or none at all.

    • You want someone that creates them for you in each session because this is how you effectively get the change you want.
